  Dangers of Essential Oils

     Aromatherapy

As far as the purpose of why you would use the essential oils, they are relatively safe. But like anything else on the market today, this is also not without the dangers. Essential oils should not be directly applied to the skin but they should be diluted with water or a vegetable oil base. Applying them with their true form can severely irritate the skin. It may even cause an allergic reaction.

You can mix the essential oil with one of these bases, grape seed extract, olive oil and hazelnut oil. Even the oils that are lemon, lime, orange and grapefruit can burn the skin. The people who sell and manufacture these essentials oils should consult their material safety data sheets (MSDS), these sheets will show the hazards of the oils and what could happen when you use the oil plain without a base.

There are other concerns such as Pesticide residue; most of these essential oils come from nature so there may be a small chance that this could be an issue. Never eat an essential oil unless you are being watched by the licensed practitioner who prescribed these oils to you. Some of the essential oil plants require them to be burned but be careful because the smoke from the plants may carry carcinogens (they same enzyme that is found in cigarettes). No matter how these were prescribed to you it is important to be supervised by someone who is an authority in administering these oils.
